What is the Safe Space project about?
Through Safe Space, SKIN-Rotterdam helps Christian international communities create an environment where safety within families can be openly discussed. We support parents, youth leaders, fathers, and young men in strengthening safe relationships, positive parenting, and healthy family dynamics. In doing so, we build on the trust that already exists within the communities and create space for open conversation about topics that are often difficult to discuss.
Why this approach?
Safety within the family remains a sensitive topic in many international faith communities. Cultural taboos, uncertainty about the Dutch context, and fear of the consequences mean that concerns about domestic violence, child abuse, or sexual misconduct often remain hidden. At the same time, parents struggle with raising children across two cultures, while young people and parents sometimes find it difficult to connect when it comes to topics such as social media, online safety, and relationships.
Fathers and young men also face significant challenges. They often experience high expectations as heads of households and role models, while there is little opportunity to share experiences or receive support. By fostering open discussion of these topics through a positive approach, we strengthen families and build safe and resilient communities.
What We’re Doing in 2026
We organize courses, dialogue sessions, and training programs where parents, youth leaders, and volunteers can gain knowledge and engage in conversation with one another. The sessions combine expert information with personal stories from those with lived experience and provide a space to ask questions in a safe environment. Where necessary, we connect participants with appropriate professional support.
In addition, we are launching a special program for fathers and young men: Father Figures & The Future Generation. In a series of interactive sessions, they will discuss fatherhood, identity, mentorship, and personal growth. Their stories and insights will be compiled into a collaborative podcast: The Father Manifesto. This initiative will highlight positive role models and ensure that conversations about fatherhood and safety continue beyond the sessions.
We work closely with churches, experts by experience, and professional organizations. SKIN-Rotterdam serves as a bridge between international faith communities and organizations specializing in prevention, support, and recovery.
By learning together, sharing experiences, and building trust, we create more space to discuss concerns and seek help in a timely manner. In this way, we contribute to safe families, stronger parents, and communities where people look out for one another.
